Kiss saves fish

Animal-lover John Day brought his two pet goldfish back from the dead by giving them the kiss of life.

Car park inspector Mr Day turned paramedic after he and wife Dawn arrived home to find 25 centimetre Goldie and 20 cm Stripes frozen stiff in their ice-covered garden pond.

Mr Day, 53, melted the ice with hot water then gave each of the three-year-old fish heart massage and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Mrs Day, 56, a florist, completed the recovery by putting the fish in a bath of water laced with a herbal tonic containing brandy.

Mr Day, of Suffolk, said: 'Slowly their eyes started moving and one of their gills opened. It was incredible.

'A lot of people would have stuck them in the bin but we wanted to try and save them.'
