As you fly into Hong Kong across the South China Sea the air is clear and fresh, the sun sparkles on the deep blue sea and the white clouds look like snow on the mountain tops.

The plane banks and turns east beginning its descent.

You look out of the window to the north and instead of seeing the beautiful countryside of China there is a six kilometre-high brown haze. You land to the familiar smell of the Kai Tak Nullah and the coughing begins.

Trans-border pollution is our biggest problem - and it is Hong Kong money and Hong Kong-owned factories that have caused it.

It is both tragic and quixotic that we are slowly and inexorably choking to death through our own economic success.
