An insurance agent was handcuffed, shot in the head, and her body chopped into pieces after being lured to Lantau Island by a client, the High Court heard yesterday.

  Nancy Chan Lan-kiu, 34, died to stop her identifying her kidnappers, said prosecutor Francis Lo.

  Her head and pieces of her body were put into plastic bags and dumped near Po Lin Monastery where they were later recovered by the police.

  Chan's client, Lo Yau-fuk, 28, who denies murder, was arrested after a security video at the Central ferry pier showed him with the victim on the day of her death.

  Mr Lo said the defendant had admitted to police that he kidnapped Chan but blamed her murder on his accomplice.

  He said he lured her to Lantau on February 6 last year and took her to a holiday home in Mui Wo. His intention was to ask her for money, the court heard.

  Lo was said to have told the police he handcuffed Chan and his accomplice then pointed a pistol at her head.

  They obtained the PIN number for her credit card and Lo guarded the hostage while the other man went to check if it was correct.

  When he returned the accomplice told Lo if the victim 'did a bunk' she would be able to recognise them.

  Mr Lo told the jury: 'She was killed to prevent her from saying anything.' The defendant said he witnessed the shooting but had tried to persuade his accomplice not to do it, the court heard.

  They then dismembered the body and dumped the remains on a hillside near Po Lin.

  Lo took $3,000 from the victim and the other man $2,000, the court heard.

  The victim's sister, Chan Choi-kiu, 30, told the court she received a telephone call two days after Chan's disappearance in which a man demanded $300,000. She said she realised her sister was in danger and called the police.

  Lo's girlfriend, Cheung Kwai-fong, 28, said he returned home late on the day Chan was killed.

  He did not tell her where he had been and said he was going to China.

  Ms Cheung was a friend of the victim and had introduced her to Lo so he could discuss buying a life insurance policy.

  She said he expressed surprise when she told him about the insurance agent's disappearance.

  But the police later showed Ms Cheung the video in which her boyfriend was seen in the company of the victim at Central ferry pier on the day of the killing.

  The video was shown in court and Ms Cheung pointed out a man in a bright green shirt. She said this was Lo. A woman walking behind him was identified as Chan.

  Lo pleaded not guilty to murder, robbery and preventing the proper burial of a corpse.

  The trial before Mr Justice Wally Yeung Chun-kuen continues today.
