Clarification

David Dalton's interesting feature on Jose Rizal (South China Morning Post, January 4) contained an error.

The historian who attended the Manila forum on Rizal last August and whom he quoted on the national hero's Chinese antecedents was not Austin Craig, but Austin Coates.

Mr Coates, the eminent historian who used to live in Hong Kong, wrote what many consider the definitive Rizal biography. Austin Craig was an American educator, now deceased, whose biography of Rizal had a number of historical inaccuracies and myths.
