MUSIC Mark Hummel. From Tuesday, 9.30pm. The Jazz Club, $250.

Round Two of the Jazz Club's 'Blues Summit'. This one features rock-influenced Californian harmonica virtuoso and vocalist/songwriter Mark Hummel of The Blues Survivors, the Bay area band which he has led on and off since 1980.

  His CV also includes gigs or recording dates with Jimmy Rogers, Billy Boy Arnold, Brownie McGhee and Charles Brown. This time Hummel appears backed by the Jazz Club stalwarts and comes with a string of critical plaudits trailing after him. This ought to be good.

Pearl River Delta Boys. Wednesday, 10.30pm. Fringe Club Theatre, $50, members, students and senior citizens $40.

This sounds engagingly eclectic. The Pearl River Delta Boys present Spurr and L'Herriott Ride Again - a programme of music and humour with elements of jazz, swing, bluegrass and Irish music, performed on the mandolin, guitar, cittern, and the violin plus vocals. It sounds well worth the price of admission.

CLASSICAL MUSIC Hong Kong String Quartet. Tuesday, 8pm, City Hall Theatre, $75, $96, Urbtix.

Chamber music is shamefully under-exposed in Hong Kong and this quartet of professionals was founded with the aim of putting that right.

  This programme is representative of the group's repertoire and includes Beethoven's Quartet in A flat major Opus 74, Schumann's Piano Quintet in E flat major Opus 44 and the world premiere of a piece entitled Fleeting Glances composed for the ensemble. Well worth supporting.

The Hampton String Quartet. Friday, 8pm, City Hall Concert Hall, $100, $150, $200, Urbtix.

Another string quartet but not exactly chamber music.

  This New York ensemble has built quite a reputation for itself - and substantial sales - from re-arranging and performing the least likely rock music in a classical style with a regular two violin, viola and cello line-up.

  This programme is dominated by the music of Led Zeppelin - and mostly the up-tempo rockers at that rather than the band's epic ballad style material - but also features songs originally performed by the Rolling Stones and the Who. Assemble the musicians and rock on.

CABARET All Classical Music Explained. Tomorrow to Wednesday, 9pm. Fringe Club Theatre, $120, members $100.

A sort of philistine's guide to the classics presented by a former music administrator turned stand-up comic named Rainer Hersch, under the auspices of the British Comedy Club of Great Britain.

  If you have ever wanted to know what customers actually do to justify their lofty positions on the rostrum this is your opportunity to find out. The show should be amusing if not seriously educational.

Readings From The Gay Book Of Lists. Thursday to Saturday, 10.30pm, Fringe Club Studio, $120, members $100, students $80, senior citizens $20.

Late-night fringe cabaret from the Stage Renegades starring Susie Wilins and Dino Mahoney in a show involving dance, music and, well, lists.

  Among the myriad questions you have doubtless been pondering for some time and which this production will answer include who are the 10 most famous gay politicians, and what is the penis size of 11 assorted animals and insects?   All will be revealed in what promises to be an entertaining one-hour show, unless you have the misfortune to be under the age of 14, in which case you will not be allowed in. It's no fun being a kid during the Fringe Festival.

This one is also for adults only, but for better reasons than that the audience might be embarrassed by the presence of minors when laughing about sex.

  The account of Amira S's experiences in the Bosnian schoolroom turned prison that gives this dramatic monologue its title is hard enough for adults who have seen a bit of the nastier side of life to take.

  The author was one of thousands of Bosnian women imprisoned, raped and tortured by their Serbian captors. She lived to tell her story and Barry Lowe, who produces and directs this production, has dramatised it. Pauline Burton plays Amira S in one of the few heavyweight productions being mounted as part of this Fringe Festival.

DANCE Ballet Antonio Gades. From Friday, 8pm, Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium, $130, $230, $290, $350, Urbtix.

Movie buffs will be familiar with the choreography and dancing of Antonio Gades from Carlos Saura's films, Blood Wedding and Carmen. Gades' company stages Carmen here and the production promises to be something special, even if it does involve a journey to the outer wilderness of Sha Tin. The Urban Council is becoming more perverse. Why isn't this on at City Hall?
