Diversity exists in sexuality

I refer to Alberto Magno Aponte's letter headlined, 'Homosexual relationships are inferior' (South China Morning Post, January 7).

Mr Aponte's argument, while residing in the safe haven of branding heterosexual relationships as the unchallenged base of our society, suffers from a fundamental fallacy.

In praising having offspring as a sign of the superiority of a heterosexual relationship, Mr Aponte fails to recognise couples who cannot or choose not to have offspring while still sharing a spiritually-fulfilling relationship.

Furthermore, love can survive even when a partner in a relationship dies. Has it ever occurred to Mr Aponte that the love for a beloved one can last beyond physical existence? I cannot find a better word than 'discriminatory' to describe Mr Aponte's remark that a homosexual relationship downgrades a human being to a second-class citizen.

There is overwhelming evidence in the scientific world supporting the view that diversity exists in sexuality.

Thinking that there can only be friendship between people of the same sex is simply ignorant. It is pitiful that gender has become a blockade preventing Mr Aponte from realising that a relationship built on love, care and commitment can also exist between two persons of the same sex.
