The air was still and there was not a sound from the viewing gallery as Sunny Wong Ping-sun began his attempt to hit a target 90 metres away.
Wong took a deep breath. With the bow drawn to his cheeks, he was almost perfectly still apart from the slight quivering of his arms because of the strength required to pull the string taut.
He took aim and kept still, before releasing his arrow with unerring accuracy. It struck its target a moment later with a 'thud'.
The crowd, at the grass pitch of the Lei Yue Mun Park and Holiday Village in Shau Kei Wan, applauded the attempt which appeared to have hit the bull's eye or 10 rings - the maximum given in competition.
But the target was too far away for anyone to be sure.
A quick look through the binoculars showed that it had indeed struck the centre of the target.
