A commercial arm of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is to co-develop and manufacture a solar car battery that 'will never go flat'. It was claimed the battery would allow vehicles to stand for months then start without a hitch. Hong Kong-based Kader Industrial Co is co-developing the project with the China Yuanwang (Group) Corp, directly owned by the PLA. Kader said the new battery would be a merged version of its 'intelligence battery' and a newly designed solar battery charger, which would allow constant voltage, prevent loss of power and extend battery life. Executive director William Li said the battery would be useful for military vehicles which were used infrequently, since they would always be ready for action. Similar technology was said to be employed by the United States military. Yuanwang is to provide the researchers and a manufacturing base, while Kader is lending technical expertise for the project. Kader said it expected that new investment in the project would not be significant because of cheap labour in China and the already advanced state of the technology behind the battery. Kader said the participation of the PLA should mean the new battery would be accepted by the Chinese military with ease, establishing the company as a designated supplier of equipment to the army.
