After reading Christine Loh's column headlined 'A passive approach when chips are down' (South China Morning Post, December 30), I too am puzzled over what to make of Tung Chee-hwa.
From some reports we are led to believe that he is his own man, but Ms Loh's article seems to indicate that he is nothing but an opportunist.
If Mr Tung truly believed Chris Patten's reforms were wrong then why didn't he speak up louder? It makes me wonder whether he will stand up for Hong Kong in the face of pressure from Beijing.
