A shopping exhibition dominated by large businesses eventually will give way to more small and medium-sized businesses, the chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce says.

Large businesses occupy more than 70 per cent of the 5,000 square foot venue at the Hong Kong Products and Services Exhibition, although they make up only 20 of 100 exhibitors.

Speaking at the Hong Kong International Trade and Exhibition Centre, James Tien Pei-chun said he expected more small and medium-sized firms at the event next year.

'It wasn't that we picked the large companies or that they swamped us with applications, it's that we needed their support for this first show.' Less familiar items such as ostrich meat are being offered alongside the services of big-name airlines and fast-food restaurants, with territory and multinational companies represented.

The event was organised by the chamber to help members expand their business opportunities while exposing the public to Hong Kong-made goods.
