Tung's Exco
Tung Chee-hwa. aged 59 Mr Tung became the first chief executive with a landslide victory of 80 per cent of the votes of the Selection Committee on December 11.
He shot to favourite for the job when Chinese President and Communist Party General Secretary Jiang Zemin seemingly singled him out for a warm handshake.
He has come under strong criticism for supporting the recommentations of the legal sub-group of the Preparatory Committee to restore draconian laws, raising concern that freedom of expression could be impaired after the handover.
He is the eldest son of the late shipping tycoon C Y Tung, was born in Shanghai in 1937 and was educated in China, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom.
After living in the US for almost a decade, he returned to Hong Kong in 1969 and immersed himself in his father's shipping empire.
Mr Tung has been a high-level adviser of the Chinese government as vice-chairman of the Preparatory Committee and a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Committee.
