RETURNING Canadian emigrants make up a significant part of the customer base of discount brokerage Green Line, director Marc Lee says. The brokerage, part of the Toronto-Dominion Bank group, offers a dial-in service for Hong Kong-based investors to trade United States and Canadian stocks but intends launching an Internet-based service called WebBroker. 'A lot of our clients use the Internet for research,' Mr Lee said. 'With WebBroker they will be able to place orders without leaving the Internet.' For now, Green Line's Hong Kong-based customers access its dealing service via a local number which connects them to a computer in Toronto. WebBroker was introduced in Canada on January 13 and will be made available to Hong Kong-based investors as soon as a browser capable of supporting the necessary encryption is available. Green Line's commission structure offers savings of up to 75 per cent compared with full service brokers, the company says. On a US$15,000 deal to buy stock selling for $30 per share, the commission would be $74. Customers receive a package of Green Line's Micromax trading software. Orders can be placed on a 24-hour basis for US and Canadian equities, options, bonds and money market instruments. Green Line's Hong Kong customers enjoy 24-hour toll-free access to account and investment information in English and Cantonese. There is no minimum balance requirement to open an account and no annual fees, custodial or exchange fees apply. Mr Lee said Green Line was the only North American discount broker with a presence in Hong Kong. The company operates from 27 offices worldwide. It is one of a rapidly expanding group of discount brokers that account for about 20 per cent of the Canadian retail brokerage market. According to the company, it has 75 per cent of the Canadian discount market, with 500,000 accounts and 600 registered representatives. Discount brokers typically offer no research or advice, passing on savings by way of lower commissions. However, many like Green Line make news and other information available to customers in various marketing packages.
