Some people might query how a power station could win an award for environment performance in the Hong Kong Awards for Industry. But that is what happened last year, with an award going to the China Light and Power's (CLP) coal-fired Castle Peak power station.
Shaun Knight, CLP corporate environment manager, said it was justified.
'We supply a product that clearly pollutes to a certain degree but we're trying to demonstrate that you can do your best to minimise it - and that's the whole concept of sustainable development and eco-efficiency,' he said.
CLP issued a corporate environmental statement in May 1995, detailing its commitments and principles on environmental issues affecting a power company.
It includes compliance with regulations, identifying pollutant emissions, adopting an environmental management system consistent with international standards and conservation of materials.
In 1995, CLP hired an independent consultant to conduct a suite of environmental audits, which became a benchmark for improvement. A major achievement was the completion last year of a programme to fit all the conventional burners with low NOx burners.
