Prima Design, winner in the machinery and equipment design section of the 1996 Hong Kong Awards for Industry, says the awards encourage Hong Kong companies to stay ahead of international competition. Company managing director James Tam said the winning product was aimed at the garment industry and developed mainly in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Thailand. The company produced a software package to aid companies with fashion design and marketing. It was tailor-made for the garment industry by a company that had background knowledge of the industry it was intending to serve. 'It is so important for Hong Kong businesses to get encouragement. The awards are a good way of rewarding people,' Mr Tam said. Winning the award also had a commercial value in the publicity it created and the additional confidence it generated in clients. Building internal morale was an important factor in winning, he said. Prima Design's team was comprised of 42 people and winning had brought them closer together.
