From sunglasses to surveillance systems, the scope for entries in the Consumer Product Design category of the Hong Kong Awards for Industry is almost limitless.

If any company markets an innovative product either wholly or partly designed in Hong Kong, it could easily be a contender.

Organised by the Design Council branch of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, it is the oldest category in the awards, having evolved from the Governor's Award for Hong Kong Design, first launched in 1969.

It reflects the crucial role of design in the manufacturing process and promotes creativity.

'It aims to promote and recognise the importance of product design in Hong Kong and encourage local entrepreneurs to improve the design, research and development of their products,' Kenneth Ting, deputy chairman of the federation, said.

'Last year, our category attracted 74 entries, accounting for almost half of the total entries of the award scheme.' This is partly because the award is product based. Eight product areas are suggested for potential entries: microcomputers and computer-related products; electronic products; electrical products; toys; jewellery; watches and clocks; clothing and fashion accessories; furniture and household products; and other consumer products.
