Post-handover executive councillor Henry Tang Ying-yen is having second thoughts about his support for the Societies and Public Order Amendment Ordinances.
The Liberal Party legislator said after lunch with Chief Executive-designate Tung Chee-hwa and party colleagues that he would study suggestions by the Preparatory Committee's legal sub-group to repeal the laws.
Mr Tang said: 'This is a very complex issue with a long history. Mr Tung has exchanged very valuable ideas with us.
'I do not want to be rushed into commenting.' Mr Tang voted for the amended ordinances with most of his party colleagues in 1992 and 1995.
Claiming his stance had not changed, Mr Tang said he did not know the difference between the original ordinances and the amended versions.
'I am not a legal expert,' he said.
