Former Hong Kong student Felix Cheung Yee-ling is set to rub shoulders with top researchers from the microelectronics industry at a San Francisco conference.
Mr Cheung, who completed a degree and an MPhil in electrical and electronic engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, is presenting his work at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference next month.
The 29-year-old has developed a new microchip which optimises the signal reception of portable satellite and TV receivers.
He is the first researcher from China or Hong Kong to present a paper at the 'Chip Olympics'.
Mr Cheung said he was nervous about the conference. 'I am anxious about what questions the top designers of chips will ask me,' he said. 'There is pressure too, because I am not just representing myself, but Hong Kong.' Professor Philip Chan, head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the university, said staff and students there were thrilled with Mr Cheung's success.
'Felix's achievement is spectacular.' he said.
