Sixty years ago Cheung Loi-tai was sold for $70 as a child bride. Now 73, she has lived in a Sheung Shui village ever since she was bought by a Hong Kong family, never seeing or hearing from her relatives on the mainland despite efforts to reach them. She had convinced herself it was time to forget, when a call came from the police saying one of her brothers was trying to trace her. 'I have been looking for my mother and younger brothers for many years,' she said. 'I went to Zhongshan 30 years ago but had no luck so I gave my address to relatives there. I believed my brother got the address but it was not too accurate. Now my dream has come true.' After failing to trace his sister for many years, Zhang Wanliang, from Lu Feng in Guangdong, sent Yuen Long police a letter as a last resort. Mr Zhang, 70, said he wanted to find his sister to 'fulfil the dream of her mother who died with her eyes open for not seeing her daughter again'. The story began in 1937 when the Japanese invaded China. The family hoped for a better life so 14-year-old Loi-tai was sold to Hong Kong, saddening her younger brother. 'I told mother many times I wanted my sister back. Some people laughed at me and said the sun would rise from the west if I were to see my sister again,' Mr Zhang said in his letter. 'I then waited for the sun to rise from the west every morning and was sad to find that it never happened.' Yuen Long police Senior Inspector Sunny Ng Yau-tik said he and his colleagues were deeply moved, some even cried, after reading the letter. He tried in vain to locate Ms Cheung through Hongkong Telecom and then sought help from officers in Sheung Shui. And in only three hours their efforts paid off. Ms Cheung was found living in Hok Tau Village with one of her nine children. Ms Cheung said she had had a hard time in Hong Kong. She had to carry sedan chairs to earn a living and she worked on a construction site after her husband suffered a stroke in 1973. He later died. She and her brother plan to have a reunion after the Lunar New Year.
