Village casino raid nets 34

CRIME officers in the north New Territories busted a well-organised, triad-operated village casino early yesterday.

Thirty-four people, including six suspected 14K and Wo Sing Wo members, were arrested in the raid involving 100 CID, uniform branch and police tactical unit officers at Tin Sum Village, Yuen Long.

Also among the arrested were five known drug suspects active in Yuen Long.

Officers seized $250,000 in cash and $2.4 million in betting chips on a big pai kau table at a two-storey communal hall.

Senior staff officer (crime), Detective Senior Superintendent Sidney Chau Foo-cheong, believed they had smashed the casino allegedly protected by 14K triads.

The 32 men and two women, aged between 18 and 46, were released on police bail from $800 to $15,000 each. They are to report back on Monday.

There was a near stand-off when a group of 70 villagers shouted and some of them even threw stones at police as the suspects were taken to a police truck.
