Chinese girl, aged three, dies after she was locked in hot car all day

A three-year-old girl has died in eastern China after she was left in a hot car all day by a member of staff at a nursery school, according to a newspaper report.

The kindergarten in Yishui county in Shandong province was paid to take the girl to and from school, but the director left her in the car for over 10 hours during the summer heat, The Beijing News reported.

He only remembered she was still in the vehicle at the end of the school day.

The kindergarten director and the girl’s teacher have been detained by the police, the report said.

In another incident on Saturday in eastern Zhejiang province a two-year-old boy was locked in a hot car for over an hour because his mother was not willing to let rescue workers break the windows to free him, the China Youth Daily reported.

The boy’s mother hired two locksmiths to get into the car in Yiwu after the child had locked himself in, with the keys left inside, but they failed.

When firefighters arrived she told them to wait so the locksmiths could try once more. The firefighters then went ahead and broke the glass.

A firefighter told the newspaper: “We noticed the boy slowly lying down on the seat. He looked unwell. Fearing for the child’s safety, we went ahead and broke the glass. The mother didn’t object.”

A group of onlookers were quoted as saying: “A piece of glass is only worth so much money. Which is more important, the glass or the child?”

Temperatues reached 25 degrees Celsius in Yiwu on Saturday.
