A CRUSADING Cathay Pacific pilot who is working to save endangered rhinos wants companies to start adopting the rare beasts.

Paul McIntosh is campaigning to halt the demand for rhino horn in traditional Chinese medicine by educating schoolchildren and promoting safaris.

As Asia Pacific co-ordinator for Kenya's Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, he raised $300,000 last year for the 56,000-hectare private reserve.

Heavy poaching fuelled by demand for rhino horn - used to treat fevers by Chinese herballists - has seen black rhino numbers in Africa plummet from 65,000 about 25 years ago to 2,500 today.

More than 100 armed guards patrol the Lewa reserve, where 21 black rhinos still roam.

Lewa is pioneering the use of tiny radio transmitters inserted into holes drilled in rhino horns while the animal is tranquilised. Their movements can then be monitored and the horn tracked if poachers strike.
