Controversial sex shop Fetish Fashion is in trouble with the law over alleged sales of the drug amyl nitrite.

Commonly known as 'poppers', the liquid delivers a rush of euphoria when its fumes are inhaled and is popular among homosexuals.

Poppers disappeared from the shelves of Fetish Fashion after police raided the Hollywood Road shop last autumn.

'We've discontinued it,' said British owner Jo Mead. 'There's no profit in it anyway.' In Britain, as in Hong Kong, poppers cannot be sold legally without a prescription. But British authorities tend to turn a blind eye when amyl nitrite appears on sex shop shelves.

'To be quite honest, I don't know how rigorously it's enforced,' said Sue Daniels of Britain's National Drugs Intelligence Unit. 'You do see it on sale in all the sex shops here.

'Legally, it's considered a pharmacy drug, which means you don't get in trouble for having it, but you could get in trouble for selling it.' In Hong Kong, amyl nitrite is classified as a 'Part 1 poison'.

These are considered less serious than 'dangerous drugs', and carry a lower legal penalty.
