Why prices take flight

We write in response to David Corney's letter (South China Morning Post, January 23).

Virgin Atlantic is trying to protect the consumer and ensure that during the hand-over of sovereignty as many people as possible are able to return to Hong Kong on its flights on their preferred travel date.

This historical event has had a marked effect on the seasonal supply and demand of airline seats. Recently, the airline industry in Hong Kong has been experiencing a higher than normal amount of 'no shows' on flights during peak periods.

During high season, many potential passengers make double or triple bookings and then make their final choice at the time of ticketing deadline.

This situation affects supply and demand and has an impact on the consumer. Prices are a direct reflection of the supply and demand curve in any industry for any product.

To ensure that residents wishing to return to Hong Kong during June 1997, flying on Virgin Atlantic or any other airline, are accommodated, we strongly advise that passengers book and purchase tickets well in advance. We would also ask that you instruct your travel agent to cancel any bookings which you will not be using. This will avoid the scenario of speculative booking.
