Tung Chee-hwa will face objections to the decision to disband the Urban Council when he meets its councillors today.

Democrat Fred Li Wah-ming said councillors from the party would demand all councillors from the two municipal councils and the district boards be allowed to serve beyond June 30.

The Preparatory Committee, which on February 1 approved the setting up of replacements to the council, said councillors could continue to serve if they met requirements such as upholding the Basic Law.

Mr Tung will decide who can serve.

Mr Li said: 'We will question Mr Tung on why there should be these criteria such as upholding the Basic Law.' He said his party - which has 23 members on the two municipal councils and 64 on the district boards - had not decided whether to accept appointments if chosen.

The party central committee will meet on Thursday to discuss the issue.
