A splash of green is always a welcome sight in a concrete jungle like Hong Kong.

It was a treat to the eye to see 400 potted plants, all vegetables, laid out at the Hong Kong Teacher's Centre in North Point. The plants were all grown by primary students.

They were the winning entries of the Primary School Children Vegetable Growing Competition, organised by the Education Department and the Agriculture and Fisheries Department (AFD).

The learning activity gave children an opportunity to study the growth of plants and develop a concern for the environment.

'Children who live in urban areas may see vegetables for sale in the market but few have actually seen vegetables growing,' said Ho Chi-leung, assistant director (chief inspector) of the Education Department.

'The competition has given children a sympathy and feel for nature and all growing things. Efforts like this also add to the greening of Hong Kong.' Six common vegetables that grow well in the winter were chosen for the competition. They were Chinese white cabbage, Chinese kale, squash, cauliflower, carrot and tomato.
