Hong Kong's sporting record at the Olympic Games may not be imposing, but backers of an unusual investment involving the main stadium for the Sydney 2000 Olympics are betting on the territory's 'spectating' prowess.
The investment involves tickets to Olympic events and equity/membership in the main Olympic venue.
Stadium Australia - the consortium constructing the Olympic stadium - is making Hong Kong one of its major targets for new investors after its initial offering attracted a poor response from the Australian public.
Its representatives believe the offer will be attractive to Hong Kong investors because of their high levels of disposable income and a desire for novel ways to spend it.
The offering was launched in Australia in October, where investors were tempted with A$10,000 (about HK$59,200) packages guaranteeing a seat at every Olympic event held in the stadium over nine days.
This package also included rights for investors to stadium club membership for 31 years from 1999, and entry to a number of sporting events - including rugby league, rugby union and Australian Rules football - after the Olympics.
