Three places on the Henley Management College distance learning MBA programme are on offer once again through the South China Morning Post and Henley MBA awards scheme.

    The annual awards, launched by the Classified Post, with the co-operation of Henley Management College, provide a career ladder for Hong Kong managers who aim to develop their personal competencies and move on to higher levels of management.

       All three awards for the distance learning MBA programme beginning in October this year are worth $420,000.

     Henley is Europe's most experienced business school. Its programmes are based on the philosophy of partnership and participation between managers and organisations.

    While it remains a premier business school in Europe, Henley is expanding its portfolio and associate network in Asia as well.

   Its expanded portfolio includes short executive courses for corporate clients - many of which operate in China.

   And to meet the needs of regional clients and an increasingly mobile student body, Henley established associate partners last year in Taiwan and Vietnam. The college expects to set up an associate partner in Korea this year.

    The college is the oldest MBA programme provider in Hong Kong and is the only business school with its own local branch office.

    Henley Hong Kong Programme Director, April Swando Hu said: 'Following our 50th anniversary two years ago, 10th anniversary in Hong Kong last year, we are proud to continue the 'tradition' of sponsoring ambitious individuals onto a rigorous yet rewarding MBA programme that is practical and felxible to suit the needs of working executives.

   'I am also impressed with the dedication required of individuals to complete the Henley MBA, in addition to balancing work and family life.

  'And therefore, I am delighted to be able to invite talented individuals to participate in what I believe is a most important milestone in their personal and academic careers paths.'    Ms Hu said Henley was planning to launch its revamped MBA programme in July.

   'We are constantly improving our programme and now supported by state-of-the-art technology, we are excited to be the best flexible learning centre in Hong Kong to help participants fulfil their personal ambitions and corporate clients address their management training needs.'    Candidates for this year's MBA awards will be chosen by a panel comprising SCMP and Henley (HK) representatives.

    The awards are granted to those willing to grasp their managerial strengths and weaknesses and seize opportunities in order to develop themselves and their careers in line with the objectives of the organisations they work for. Deputy Chief Executive of the South China Morning Post, Owen Jonathan, said: 'Through its involvement with the MBA scheme, the SCMP hopes to make a modest contribution to the development of Hong Kong's young people who are likely to be among its future leaders.'    Classified Post Advertising Director, Sylvia Wilson, said: 'The SCMP is once again delighted to offer this year's MBA awards in conjunction with Henley Management College, to aspiring executives wishing to advance their careers through a well-recognised business college.' 'As the largest recruitment newspaper in Southeast Asia, and the leader in executive recruitment, we reach senior management and decision-makers. For this reason, it seems natural and appropriate that we support management development by lending a hand to those seeking to advance their careers through the means of a business degree.'     Applicants are required to outline their objectives in a 250-word essay titled: 'How you think the Henley MBA programme will help you to achieve your company's short-term and long-term objectives'.

   A maximum of six candidates will be short-listed for interview by a panel made up of SCMP and Henley representatives. Professional and personal attributes will be evaluated in selecting the three award winners. SCMP's Mr Jonathan said: 'The judging panel looks for people who have leadership skills, well-rounded personalities, a strong sense of ethics and have the ambition to succeed in Hong Kong's competitive environment.'     Last year's three winners say the Henley distance learning MBA experience has changed them and that they acquired more knowledge and honed the skills they already had.

   Regina Chu was impressed with the overall programme.

  She said: 'I honestly appreciate the scholarship for three reasons. First, the curriculum is well-structured and materials are superb. Apart from providing students with comprehensive resources on topical management issues, the videos, and particularly case studies, make excellent reference points that relate to everyday business.

  'Second, the support by the Hong Kong office of Henley is marvellous. The staff and tutors are helpful in all respects, and the Henley Newslink and the local newsletter provide good communication channels for students.

  'Third, there is Lotus Notes, which provides a helpful platform to support the learning process. 'I have benefitted a lot from the programme. I fully support the saying that 'Henley is the true leader in distance learning'. ' Benny Tjhang said the programme was practical, adding that this was the hallmark of a good postgraduate programme.

    'The course is designed in a way that you are compelled to apply the concepts described in the work books to your own work,' he said.

   'Apart from learning about the critical issues facing any company, like gaining competitive advantages, you are also forced to think and analyse, seemingly mundane things that occur at the office that you take for granted, and you say, 'Aha!' It is moments like these that give you the most satisfaction for the slogging that you put yourself through.'     For Peter Lai Chung-kei, another winner, the flexibility was important.

   'The Henley distance learning MBA is not just a famous MBA course. Its beauty lies in the flexibility and quality which executives have been dreaming of,' he said.
