Deng Xiaoping died last night following respiratory failure, Xinhua (the New China News Agency) said early today.

The announcement of Deng's death was made in a letter to the Communist Party, the People's Liberation Army and the people of various ethnic groups throughout China, it said.

Deng died at 9.08 pm yesterday, but Xinhua did not report the news until 2.41 am today. It said he 'had suffered the advanced stage of Parkinson's Disease with complications of lung infections [and] passed away because of the failure of the respiration-circulating functions after failing to [respond] to emergency treatment.

Four armed guards with AK-47s stood outside the alley to Deng's home, but there were no other signs of troop movements in the capital.
