Students with the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong (OLI) could in future be using the Internet to submit assignments and take tutorials, a seminar was told.

It focused on the World Wide Web, and how the Internet could be used to the advantage of staff and students. OLI spokeswoman Angel Yip Yan-kuen said it wanted to set up an electronic library on campus, which students could tap into from home computers.

Stephen Tong Yiu-chung, of the OLI's Information Technology Unit, said the net could be used for assignments, tutorials could be arranged and registration carried out.

'However, it doesn't mean all administrative work will be carried out by computer,' said Ms Yip.

'People can still handle those procedures in person or by mail. It only offers an alternative for people.' Internet System Administrator at ABC Communications, Kong Kan-chung, explained how to get connected to the web and what its present and future uses could be. He discussed its benefits and limits.

The electronic library is scheduled for development, after a contract is signed with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, which will develop the system.
