ADMINISTRATIVE SECRETARY ANSON CHAN FANG ON-SANG, 58 Born in Shanghai in 1940 and moved with her family to Hong Kong in 1948.
Married to Archie Chan Tai-wing, a director of Caltex Oil, and has a son, a daughter and two grand-children.
Educated at the University of Hong Kong. Joined the Government in 1962. Posts included Director of Social Welfare and Secretary for Civil Service before becoming Secretary for Economic Services between 1987 and 1993.
Her appointment as Chief Secretary in November 1993 made her the first Chinese and first woman to hold the post.
Until she announced in October 1996 that she would not run for the post of chief executive, Mrs Chan led every public opinion poll for the post. Lives in government quarters in Barker Road.
FINANCIAL SECRETARY DONALD TSANG YAM-KUEN, 52 Joined the Government in 1967 after graduating with a Master's in Public Administration from Harvard University. Married with two sons, and enjoys hiking, swimming and bird-watching.
Became Financial Secretary in September 1995, making him the third most senior person in Government after the Governor and Chief Secretary. First non-British Financial Secretary. Chairman of several committees including the Economic Advisory Committee, the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee and the Banking Advisory Committee.
