The Government's call for extra funding to continue the creation of a Mandatory Provident Fund is likely to be endorsed by legislators today.

Pamela Tan Kam Mi-wah, head of the fund's office, was confident yesterday that the Government could secure enough votes after the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong and its ally, the Federation of Trade Unions, which together hold seven votes, finally agreed to support the funding.

'The Government has satisfied most of demands of legislators after several meetings,' she said.

Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong legislator Chan Yuen-han said the Government had promised to sit on the management committee to monitor the fund and would consider enlarging the pool to absorb more low-income groups.

Governor Chris Patten yesterday also put a last effort into urging legislators to support today's funding bid for $25 million to keep the provident fund office, saying the scheme was indispensable.

'I'm sad that there should still be question marks over the scheme,' he said.
