I am a customer of Hong Kong Star Internet and recently encountered a problem after I moved house. I am using Internet Explorer 3.0 under Windows 95. My computer is a Compaq Pentium 75 with an internal Compaq 19200 modem.
Before moving, the Internet link was fine. Now whenever I dial up Hong Kong Star and have the handshaking signal confirmed, the 'post-dial modem terminal' screen appears with lots of question marks flashing for about 10 seconds, during which the computer screen hangs. After that, the screen returns to the dial-up networking screen and I cannot log on.
After I try about 10 times, I can get in but the response is very slow. I tried another number using the same modem and had no trouble. I then used another external modem and successfully connected. I also brought my computer to my office and had no problem getting through.
Was the initial problem due to my telephone plug and socket? YIM KA-FAT Hong Kong I would put my money on it being a telephone line problem. I had the same problem dialling into my provider after moving house last year. I use a Hi-Note Ultra II with a Megahertz 28.8 X-jack PC Card modem. However, my connection problems were only on one of the phone lines at my place - everything worked like clockwork on the other line.
