Provincial labour authorities in Vietnam are investigating conditions at a Hong Kong-owned toy factory in Danang following reports of workers fainting and stopping work from exhaustion.

Officials from Key Hinge Industrial denied the reports, insisting they were committed to working out bureaucratic 'teething problems' in the factory.

A spokesman from the Danang Labour-Invalid-Social Welfare Service said officials were checking the ventilation at Key Hinge's new factory following reports workers were falling sick.

Reports in the semi-official Thanh Nien newspaper claimed about 200 workers stopped work early last Friday after three workers fainted in the paint-shop and 22 others said they were too exhausted to work.

Key Hinge, a private Hong Kong firm, set up the first stage of the 100-per-cent foreign owned venture in March last year to produce small giveaway products for McDonalds hamburgers.

It employs nearly 2,000 workers, but will eventually hire 7,000 Vietnamese staff as part of an investment commitment of more than US$10 million.
