Wine: Sandalford Cabernet Sauvignon Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon Region: Margaret River, Western Australia Vintage: 1994 Sandalford Winery underwent drastic changes in 1992. The winery, which returned to Western Australian ownership, embarked on a major programme of vineyard and winery development, with Bill Crappsley hired as winemaker. Wine quality has improved considerably. Sandalford produces three levels of wine: the basic is the Caversham label, then the 1840 Collection, while the premium wines are all under the Margaret River Label. The Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 1994 is an impressive wine. The colour is quite intense. On the nose there are strong aromas of blackberry fruit. On the palate is the characteristic Margaret River mintiness, loads of fruit, complexity, some pepperiness, and a long finish. There is also a hint of coconut from the American oak. The 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon is attractive now but will age nicely for several years. Try it with beef casserole. Sandalford Margaret River is renowned for its high wine prices as most wine from there is premium quality from small producers. In the circumstances, this wine is reasonably priced. Where To Buy: From the importer, Boutique Wine (Tel: 2870-0426), a company specialising in Western Australian quality wines, at $170 per bottle.
