A RETIRED police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing after a two-month probe into his attempt to sell two semi-automatic pistols without an arms-dealing licence.
But his case has sparked a review which could lead to tightening the definition of 'arms dealer' under Hong Kong law.
Legal experts and police said former New Territories South superintendent Guy Shirra broke no law by advertising his two Glock pistols at Hebe Haven Yacht Club, Sai Kung, in December.
The investigation hinged on whether his actions constituted a 'business deal'.
Firearm law enforcement officers admitted the law failed to define the term 'business' clearly.
'Mr Shirra's case was a bit oddball; it fell through a crack,' said Assistant Commissioner of Police Steve Robins.
