Students who made the best use of library and research facilities for projects were rewarded with prizes in a competition held for the first time in Hong Kong.

  Organised by the Urban Council Public Libraries and the library section of the Education Department, the aim of the competition was to encourage students to think creatively and work as a research team.

  The event was divided into two parts, with a library project for secondary schools and a picture-book design contest for primary pupils.

   Shun Tak Fraternal Association Tam Pak Yu College won the gold prize, with their project, History of Hong Kong Airport.

  'We started to prepare this project last November,' said student Wong Sin-hung.

  'We took photographs of the airport, North Point, Tsing Yi and Lai King. Then we made use of some videos to learn more about the airport core programme projects,' said colleague Wong Ho-man.

  'Although we faced some difficulties, we learned more about the history of Hong Kong, photography skills and how to work with others,' said Cheung Koon-hung.

  Students at Sha Tin Government Secondary School did not expect to win a prize but their project, called New Immigrant Student, took silver prize.

  'We just wanted to gain some experience and were happy to learn more things through this competition,' said student Wong Tsz-sang.

   Their topic tackled the issues of discrimination, Government policy and solutions to the problems faced by newcomers.

  'After we finished the project, our attitude towards new immigrants changed,' said Cheung Kin-hang and Chou Chuk-nam. 'They need our help and support.'   Buddhist Chi Hong Chi Lam Memorial College won bronze for a project on the life of a hawker.

  Student Yeung Tsan-sum said that traffic, housing, airport as well as immigrant problems were too political and frequently chosen as projects.

  Students at the Buddhist college wanted to analyse a traditional aspect of Hong Kong life, and chose the hawker community.

  Urban councillor Tam Kwok-kiu praised the students' efforts and the high degree of creativity and teamwork shown.

  ''The work by the participants was of a very high standard. They have done an excellent job,' he said.

   Mr Tam added that the competition received a favourable response from schools and students.

  Library project judges were Oscar Ho Hing-kay, exhibition director of Hong Kong Arts Centre; Alima Tuet, president of Hong Kong Library Association; Cheng Kai-nam, of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education; Yeung Wai-fung, an Urbco adviser on Hong Kong art; and Yung Sze-hung, principal inspector at the Education Department.

   Winners of Library Projects for Secondary Schools were:   Gold - STFA Tam Pak Yu College; Silver - Sha Tin Government Secondary School; Bronze - Buddhist Chi Hong Chi Lam Memorial College.

  Winners of Picture Book Design Competition for Primary Schools were:   Gold - Fong Shu Fook Tong Foundation Fong Shu Chuen Primary School; Silver - Canossa School (Hong Kong); Bronze - Bishop Walsh School.
