The Governor and Chief Secretary between them have more than $1 million to spend on entertainment each year. And though Chris Patten is to sail away just three months into the financial year - the Government is requesting a full year's budget for the Governor's household. The Chief Executive-designate Tung Chee-hwa has expressed reservations about moving into Lower Albert Road. The spending estimates released yesterday present a once-a-year opportunity to see senior officials' expense accounts, topped by the Governor's $689,300 allowance - so there could yet be a few big parties at Government House. Chief Secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang can spend $413,600 entertaining while the new Chief Justice gets a $344,700 allowance. The Government has earmarked $317,000 for Financial Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen for entertainment but Attorney-General Jeremy Mathews and future Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung Oi-sie must split just $206,800. Anyone appointed a High Court judge gets a $39,100 'dress allowance' to buy gown, wig, and shoes.
