Singapore's cleanliness is impressive but a group of teenagers still say Hong Kong has a lot going for it.
The Urban Council-appointed Ambassadors of Hygiene made the observation on their return from their prize-winning trip to the Lion City.
'Hong Kong restaurants are luckier than those in Singapore because the Urban Council here not only penalises those in breach of the public health regulations, but also organises an annual hygiene competition to give recognition to those with good hygiene standards,' said Tai Hei-yan, 14.
Hei-yan and 23 fellow ambassadors toured Singapore and talked to some of its environmental health officials.
Poon Sin-man said he believed it was worthwhile for the Urban Council to spend money organising such activities as the restaurant hygiene competition.
Aged between nine and 17, the ambassadors won their trip by writing an essay called: 'How does the UC enrich city life?' They beat 500 other contestants in the first round and then had an interview before becoming ambassadors.
Their five-day trip to Singapore was led by council health education committee chairman Steve Chan Kwok-leung and Councillor Joseph Lai Chi-keong.
