Po On Power is betting material in today's third event at Sha Tin. The lightly raced three-year-old has been given a typical John Moore-style preparation. He gives his youngsters plenty of time to come to themselves, allowing them to improve naturally with their racing more than pounding the work into them in the mornings. The result is by the time they are fully fit and fully experienced mentally they are often on a very handy handicap mark. Moore's improving young stayers Fantastic and Liffey River were classic examples of this but Po On Power is not too dissimilar. He's taken time to trim down and get fit and after four runs he's found himself positioned to win in Class Five. Last time he underlined that fact when staying on well to run fourth to Heart to Heart over 1,400 metres at Sha Tin. This afternoon he is moved up to a mile and the way he finished his race off behind Heart to Heart, the extra distance could well be enough to see him prevail. And since that outing, Po On Power has impressed in his work. He went particularly well in a jump out on Monday morning with the very good worker, Big Apple. For the first time, Po On Power really fizzed and he also looked more together mentally. Four-time champion jockey Basil Marcus rode Po On Power last time but he has to miss the mount this time round as he is claimed by retaining trainer Ivan Allan to partner Rainbow Star. But Moore has found the ace French jockey, Eric Saint-Martin, to replace Marcus and the highly competitive Saint-Martin is riding as brilliantly as ever. Rainbow Star has to be considered a tierce hope behind Po On Power, now that he's back to Sha Tin. The mile, especially with the short straight in operation, is basically too short for him, but he could well rattle home late to pinch third, maybe even second, on the line. Light And Bright is likely to pose the biggest threat. Forget his latest effort when he finished last behind Add Some over 2,000 metres as Light And Bright makes much more appeal as a miler than he does as a stayer. The drop in distance should suit and he is a good quinella chance on a couple of earlier runs.
