Police said yesterday they were checking if provisional legislator Wong Siu-yee, who opened an office using his formal title this week, has broken the law.

Democratic Party legislator Andrew Cheng Kar-foo and at least 10 fellow members of the United Front Against the Provisional Legislature yesterday protested at Wan Chai Police Headquarters and made a formal complaint against Mr Wong.

Mr Cheng urged the police to investigate if Mr Wong breached the Societies Ordinance by setting up an office in the territory. He urged the police to seek advice from the Attorney-General's chambers to see whether it was in accordance with the Letters Patent for a legislature other than the existing legislature to operate in Hong Kong.

Last night, Mr Wong accused Mr Cheng and fellow members of stirring up trouble and 'wasting police time'.

'In Hong Kong, there is no law stipulating that members of the provisional legislature can't set up their office in Hong Kong to serve Hong Kong people.

'Everybody knows that the provisional legislature is the law-making body of the Special Administrative Region, not a society.' He said the setting up of the Hunghom office carrying his formal title in the provisional legislature was 'reasonable, proper and legal'.
