Visitors queue patiently in the sun for the annual open day at Government House and its garden yesterday. Police had to turn people away as a record 40,300 turned up. Government House spokesman Tse Cheung-hing said staff expected more than last year's 24,000, but had to take action when the queue snaked as far as the former Hilton Hotel site in Queen's Road Central. Police reckon that at about 3.30 pm there were 9,500 people waiting. 'At one point there were 7,000 people inside,' he said. The house is open again today, with a ticket holders-only day next Saturday for wheelchair-users.
