Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has become the first tertiary institution in the territory to sell souvenirs on the Internet.

  The online shopping system, advertised on the HKUST homepage, was developed by five Information and Systems Management students, supervised by Professor Tam Kar-yan.

  Orders go via the Net to the campus souvenir shop.

  The service is aimed at Hong Kong and overseas markets and inquiries have been received from Japan and the United States.

  About 2,000 people visited the online shopping during the first month of operation.

  Professor Tam said another group of students was working to improve the service.

  He said the 'second generation' would add more attractive screen layout and introduce soundbites to make the site more interactive and user-friendly. The second phase would be completed this summer.

  The professor said they hoped to include an Internet phone service in the third phase, so customers could talk to shop staff while browsing the site.

  The project gives final-year students practical experience of a commercial Internet service.

  Items include clothes, umbrellas, leather products, pens, mugs and picture frames, from $20 to $350.

  Prices are slightly lower if purchased over the Net but customers pay a $30 service charge for every purchase as well as mailing costs.
