THE Council of the Chinese University of Hongkong (CU) recently announces that Professor Charles Kao has agreed to continue in office as Vice-Chancellor of the university for a further period of two years from August 1, 1994 to July 31, 1996. A world renowned engineer and research scientist in telecommunications, Professor Kao is a pioneer in optical fibre modern technology. Professor Kao first became Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University in 1987. Under his leadership, the university enhanced its academic and research programmes. Two new faculties (Education and Engineering) were founded. Several new research institutes and new degree programmes including Architecture, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Japanese Studies, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Education and Primary Education were launched to meet community needs. Professor Kao also masterminded several projects aimed at creating new initiatives for industrial and business development in Hongkong. Sir Quo-wei Leo, Chairman of the University Council, expressed gratitude towards Professor Kao's valuable contributions to the university. Professor Kao's continuation in office will be significant in enabling the Chinese University to broaden and deepen its foundation to meet the challenges of the next century.
