Major personal computer companies are awaiting a government call to tender following last week's budget announcement of a substantial purchase of equipment for schools.
Financial Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen pledged to spend $300 million to provide all public primary schools with computers and to set up information technology learning centres in prevocational and technical schools over the next two years.
Of this total, $252 million is earmarked for primary schools, with $166 million going towards hardware and software and $32 million for training.
Fifteen multimedia computers will be put in each primary school, resulting in a total purchase of 8,250 units for 411,000 students.
Presently, only secondary schools are supplied with computers.
In addition, prevocational and technical schools will each receive 41 computers to the benefit of 43,000 students.
