Channel [V] and MTV are set to face off in Australia after the rival music video channels both announced takeovers of existing operations in the country.

The Hong Kong-based Channel [V], part of STAR TV, has signed a joint venture with XYZ Entertainment to take over its music channel RED on April 18.

The channel will be re-named Channel [V] Australia and be distributed to about 450,000 homes on the Foxtel pay-television service.

MTV has signed a licensing agreement with ARC Music Television, a joint venture between Austereo Ltd, Village Roadshow Ltd and Optus Vision, which will begin broadcasting tomorrow.

Darren Childs, Channel [V]'s director of business development, said the channel was paid a 'significant amount' for brand-name use and received full management, financial and creative control.

'We went into this joint venture as an investment in the future as opposed to taking out ridiculous sums of money in licensing fees in the early years,' Mr Childs said.
