Papers set alight after acquittals

Ten protesters burned their summonses outside a court yesterday after being acquitted of assaulting and obstructing police officers during a meeting to select the Chief Executive.

Eastern magistrate Paul Kelly ordered the group to be bound over for nine months in the sum of $2,500 after the prosecution agreed not to offer evidence against them.

It was alleged they attempted to enter the seventh floor of the Convention and Exhibition Centre on November 15 to protest against the selection of the Chief Executive by the 400-strong Selection Committee The protesters - including three Urban Councillors, Chan Kwok-leung, 30; Eric Wong Chung-ki, 31; and Tang Chi-ho, 30; and two district board members, Chui Pak-tei, 45; and To Kwan-hang, 31 - said they would still stage a protest in future whenever they felt it was necessary.

They pleaded not guilty to a total of 18 summonses issued by the police.
