PE compulsory for full-time students
Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU) and Hong Kong Baptist University (BU) are the only two universities in the territory that have made PE compulsory for full-time students.
All CU full-time undergraduates, except those on a nursery course, the physical education course and the primary education course, must take two PE courses in the first year.
Those who fail to take the courses because of health problems can read related books, write a report and take a written test. CU's director of physical education, Hon Kwai-yin, said the subject had been compulsory since 1963.
Frank Fu Hoo-kin, head of the Department of Physical Education at BU, said: 'We hope to achieve whole-man education through PE.' Professor Fu said PE was an essential part of education.
