I refer to the letter headlined, 'So much confusion for Brits', by Robin Bradbeer (South China Morning Post, March 5).
Under the existing arrangements, British citizens who have right to land status will not be given any conditions of stay upon their return to Hong Kong after making overseas trip.
The aim of the recent proposed changes of immigration policy on British citizens is to bring into line their immigration status with that of other foreign nationals.
Under the proposals, British citizens are required to apply for appropriate visas if they intend to take up employment, study or invest in Hong Kong. Their dependents, if they fulfil the stipulated requirements and obtain the dependent visas, can take up employment in Hong Kong without a visa.
It is the aim of the Hong Kong Government to implement the proposed changes on April 1. In this connection, we are now seeking the approval of the legislature to amend the relevant provisions of the Immigration Ordinance. In the meantime, no changes have been made to the existing arrangements.
In the absence of the personal particulars of Mr Bradbeer and his colleagues, we are unable to undertake an investigation of the circumstances concerned. We would be glad to hear from Mr Bradbeer or his colleagues. They should contact our K. O. Lee on 2829 3123, so that their cases can be discussed individually.
