The future legislature has been urged not to back-pedal on human rights protection when it revises the two ordinances. The Democrats made the call at a meeting with Secretary of Justice-designate Elsie Leung Oi-sie. Ms Leung met legislators Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, Albert Ho Chun-yan and James To Kun-sun on Wednesday to discuss the law changes. Mr Ho said they had asked Ms Leung whether the first Special Administrative Region (SAR) legislature would be allowed to restore the existing Societies and Public Order Ordinances after they were amended by the provisional legislature. They also asked whether a more 'progressive' amendment by the SAR legislature would be seen as a breach of the Basic Law. The Democrats said they would take the interim body to court if it legislated before the handover and demanded that extradition between Hong Kong and China be similar to arrangements with other countries.
