Call to seek views as AIDS test is expanded

BEIJING'S Hongkong affairs advisers have called on China to seek local views before implementing policies that affect people here.

The call was made in view of concern about Guangzhou testing frequent travellers, including Hongkong people, for AIDS.

But it also came as Guangdong health officials confirmed reports that the tests would be expanded to more air, land, and sea entry points.

They claimed it was necessary to guard against the spread of AIDS, as the problems of prostitution and drug abuse became more serious in the province.

A Hongkong Health Department spokesman said last night they were waiting for clarification on where tests were being performed. There have been complaints from visitors using air and land routes to Guangdong about testing.

Earlier, advisers Mr Ng Hong-mun, Mr Cheng Yiu-tong and Mr Cheng Kai-nam suggested that consultation could be conducted through local delegates to the National People's Congress and deputies to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

The comments came during a meeting with NCNA vice-director, Mr Zhang Junsheng.
